Well, after getting beyond the frustration over my confusion of what I’d actually need to use Wiki for, I read Vicki Davis’ blog on Wiki Wiki Teaching. Her enthusiasm was contagious. She decided to attempt a Wiki after attending a Georgia Educational Technology Conference and listening to David Warlick‘s presentation. I re-read some of the Wiki’s and saw them differently the second time around. Is there a Wiki in my future? Probably, due to taking part in this course. Would it help me to have one for work? I still have to work on the answer to that question. I did research a few Wiki’s, such as Association of Donor Relations Professionals (ADRP) and Stewardship, but I didn’t contribute to any of them…yet.
Begin to Build a Reading Habit (7a) – Hold On, Nelly!
I’ve just looked at my Reader list and I’ve realized what an eclectic sort I am! I’m following everything from news, my fellow FA bloggers, FA alums, tech sites, fundraising sites, and even astrology sites. I bet there is a study done somewhere that can determine a person’s personality by looking at the sites in that person’s Feed list. Hmm, then what would my Reader list say about me?
- I’m eclectic (Mentioned earlier).
- I’m curious.
- I’m unfocused at times (Does that mean I’m scatterbrained?).
- I can be reflective; at other times, thought provoking (I had to think hard on that; there is a big difference; two ends of the spectrum.).
- Or maybe, I’m Chiron, the Wounded Healer…
.
My Reader list does not appear to have an end point, it just keeps going. So, therefore, I must be eternal!
Thing 5 (Week 3): Getting Started with RSS – Welcome to the Future, Diane!
I’m reading along in Time Capsule: One Year Ago on Instructify and suddenly I jump back in time to 1957. We’re all little second and third graders sitting on little chairs in the basement of Upton Elementary School, Beverly, Massachusetts. The ceiling is lined with big, asbestos-lined heat pipes. The teachers have put on a reel-to-reel documentary. I’m waiting for the movie. It’s like going to the drive-in movies with my folks, but no pajamas and no mosquitoes and I’m pretty excited.
The week before when we were down here in the big, white basement, we were instructed on how to hide under our desks during an air raid. It was still the Cold War, and we were told anything could happen. Civil Air Patrol was popular. Teens loved taking part in the drills. Adults tried to put fear in to our little lives, but at the time, I thought it was just a game. “Run, duck, hide,” but not the “hide and seek” that I loved to play after supper with my brother and sister and the neighborhood kids until the streetlights came on.
The documentary was one I’d never forget and I was so impressed with what we were shown that after school I ran straight home and told my folks what would be coming in the future…when it would be coming, I didn’t know, but I saw it in the movies, so it must be true! We were going to have a telephone that you could “see” the person who was calling you! You would pick up the phone, there was a TV-screen, and you would actually be talking face-to-face with the caller! How extraordinary is that? I think my folks were impressed, too, but not as impressed as I was. At least, I don’t remember that excitement coming from them with that news.
Little did I know then (at seven years old) that this time capsule that I was allowed to look in to was a very small piece in time with a very small piece of history! One item mentioned in Time Capsule: one year ago was Screencasting, and we can record anything and show it via computer. Well, welcome to the future, Diane.
Thing 2 – Thoughts about Web 2.0
I have enjoyed watching the videos on designing my blog for FA23Things and I think the process of looking for the right image for the heading, the right wording for a description for my blog have allowed me to really think about the importance of the steps, and the importance of getting down on Blog just what my experiences will be over the next few weeks. It gives me a myriad of feelings: awe, obscurity, immensity, and at times a feeling of being overwhelmed.
Thing 1 – Reflections on Lifelong Learning
Well, this is the first entry required. Habit #6, Using Technology to My Advantage, is one of the habits of the 7 1/2 habits that I can relate to. I want to expand on my limited knowledge of technology to increase my work capabilities; use that knowledge to my advantage.
